Viscoelastic Coupling Dampers

viscoelastic coupling dampers

The Viscoelastic Coupling Damper (VCD™) is an award-winning technology that provides optimal performance for both wind and earthquakes without occupying any valuable architectural space.

Seamlessly embedded within the structure

VCD modules are simply configured in the most commonly used structural configurations, such as between reinforced concrete core walls replacing coupling beams, or between outriggers and exterior columns.

YC Condominiums

Toronto, Canada

YC Condominiums is a 66-storey ultra-slender glass sculpture in the heart of Toronto at Yonge and College streets. 84 modular viscoelastic coupling dampers replace 42 reinforced concrete beams on 21 levels. These dampers suppress the lateral wind vibrations under frequent storms that were a crucial aspect of the building’s designs. Since no valuable sellable space was occupied, over 5,000 additional square feet of space at the Penthouse and Mechanical levels were recovered.

The seasons residences

Manila, Philippines

The Seasons Residences consists of 4-tower development, with a shared podium. The development is located in one of the worst areas of the world for seismic and wind demands. The VCDs were used in all towers to ensure that the occupants are safe and comfortable and the structure is protected during frequent and strong earthquakes and typhoons.

robust testing

Thousands of tests have been conducted on the VCD and VE material to date, including wind, seismic and high-cycle fatigue tests amongst others. Please see full-scale VCD test videos below of simulations of a VCD in an 85-storey building subject to a M9 earthquake, and a VCD under loading beyond a Maximum Credible Earthquake, causing a Viscoelastic-Plastic response.
